This month sees the introduction of E10 fuel to replace the old E5 standard. The new fuel contains a higher percentage of renewable bioethanol (10%, up from 5%) in a drive to reduce CO2 emissions but it is not without consequence. 

All UK vehicles made after 2011 should be compatible with E10, together with most vehicles made since the late 1990’s. Check to see if any given vehicle is compatible by entering its details on the government’s E10 Service Page. That said, the accuracy of such a check is not guaranteed and may be affected by certain aftermarket modifications.

It is estimated as many as 600,000 vehicles on UK roads will not be compatible with the new fuel and, for them, they will need to use the much more expensive super grade E5 unleaded petrol or risk running issues and damage to seals, plastics, and metals over the long-term, given the corrosive properties of bioethanol. Indeed, classic cars are particularly vulnerable to the long-term corrosive effects of E10.

Precision Engine Services stock Millers VSPe Power Plus One Shot Fuel Treatment.  This is an ‘all in one’, multi shot, petrol fuel treatment providing ethanol protection, lead replacement and an octane improver dependent on selected fuel quality.  It is recommended for all classic engines previously requiring leaded fuel and now running on unleaded fuel.

Unlike with petrol/diesel misfuelling, a one-off mistake at the pumps is not likely to cause any lasting damage, providing the correct fuel is used as soon as possible.

The changes that have been imposed for MOT testing could have an impact on your vehicle when it is in to Precision Engine Services for ANY work at ANY time. 

If, for instance, we have your vehicle in for routine work and a road spring is found to be broken, it is imperative that we bring this to your attention and advise that it is not legal to drive the vehicle on the road without replacing the broken spring.  We can't, of course, refuse to let you take your vehicle away but if this is what you wish to do, we will ask you to sign a Disclaimer which clearly states that the car is dangerous and must not be used on the Highway.

Precision Engine Services will be closed from 4pm today, Thursday 21st December for the Christmas break.  We will be open for business as usual from 8am on Monday, 8th January 2018.

Earlier in the year, the Government ran a consultation on a proposal to extend the frequency of MOTs.

The options were:

1. 1. No change – all vehicles to have its first MOT after 3 years and every year thereafter .
2. 2. Move to having the first MOT after 4 years and every year thereafter, for all vehicles.
3. 3. Move to having the first MOT after 4 years (for cars and light vans) and every year thereafter; but no change for vans over 3000kg (ie 3 years then every year thereafter).

Whilst the Government promote the move in a positive light, claiming motorists could save significantly with the proposed changes, the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers highlighted the dangers involved.  “By extending the test frequency there will be more non-roadworthy vehicles on the road for a further year with no official mileage or emissions recorded until after four years”.

They note the following failure rates.  In 2015, 17% of cars and light vans failed their first MOT; whilst 36% of vans over 3000kg failed. 
The defect categories, for all vehicles, were:

• Brakes – 16.9%
• Lighting – 42.2%
• Steering – 13.9%
• Tyres – 12%

There are currently 2.23 million 3-year old passenger cars in operation.
It will be interesting to hear what the Government’s findings are and whether or not there will be any change to the current system.  We will be sure to keep you informed.
