Diesel Particulate Filters - now part of the MOT test

Posted on

Your vehicle's Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can block with soot and therefore it prevents it from working.  As a result, many people often remove these filters as opposed to having it cleaned or replaced.

However, from February 2014 MOTs will include a check to see if the filter is present and if it is not the vehicle will fail its MOT (provided the vehicle was built with a filter in situ).

The purpose of the DPF is to reduce harmful exhaust emissions into the atmosphere. Where it is removed, the vehicle will almost certainly contravene the Road Vehicles Regulations.  This could see a fine of up to £1000 for a car and £2500 for a light goods vehicle.
